Gurdwara Sri Tambu Sahib Jee
About Gurdwara Sri Tambu Sahib Jee
Tambu means tent – the tree touched down to shelter Guru Nanak, that is why it is called Gurdwara Sri Tambu Sahib Jee. As Guru Nanak grows up, Guru’s father Mehta Kahlu asked his son to do some business for him. Pitta Mehta Kalu Jee gave him 20 rupees to do business at Mandi Choorkana (new name is Farooq Abad) – Mandi Choorkana is about 40kms from Nankana Sahib and about 2kms from Gurdwara Sacha Sauda. At Sacha Sauda just 2kms away from the Mandi (Market) he found some Sadhus hungry. Over there he changes his mind, goes to food Mandi and purchase food and run Langar. As he comes back empty handed but with full inner satisfaction what he had done.
Realizing that, his father will be annoyed to know all that, he took shelter of this tree known as Mal tree, Mal (also called jal and van) is a shady tree (the tree bowed extra downwards after Guru Nanak’s shelter).Bhai Mardana reported Mehta Kalu Jee and narrated the whole story that he has spent whole money on feeding hungry people. Pitta Kalu jee reached this place and then Babay Nanki also followed knowing that her father is not happy at all on this true trade. It is said that she stopped her father to be annoyed anymore. Finally they took Guru Nanak back home.
On hearing of this incident, Rai Bular pleaded before Mehta Kalu by saying “Patwari Ji ! Lest you chide the boy, let me make it clear to you that the whole city is blessed by his grace and presence”. On the spot he donated 750 Murabbah (18750 Acre) that was half of his total land. This Shrine is situated at a distance of about half kilometre from Gurdwara Janam Asthan. Pilgrims feel proud to pay their homage to this sacred site. A sublime Gurdwara is under construction and hopefully ready by Gurpurab 2024.
