Bhai Mani Singh was born in a pious and dedicated Gursikh family which was devoted to the Gurus. Bhai Mani Singh had the rare privilege to be the childhood friend of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Bhai Sahib had also the honor to scribe the holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib in the presence of Sahib-i-Kamal Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. In 1721 AD, Mata Sundri Ji appointed Bhai Mani Singh as a Granthi of Sri Harimandir Sahib.
Bhai Mani Singh, with the permission of the Goverment, on the occassion of Bandi Chor Diwas, invited the Sikhs to assemble at Sri Harimandir Sahib. When Bhai Sahib came to know that the authorities conspired to kill the assembled Sikhs, he postponed the congregation. For this offence, Bhai Mani Singh was imprisoned. Bhai Mani Singh was first enticed to convert himself and afterwards threatened with dire consequences but Bhai Sahib did not yield and remained steadfast and firm as a Sikh.
At this place in 1724 AD, Bhai Mani Singh was martyred by being cutting bone by bone starting from the finger tips. There was also an old well at this place where after being martyred, the Sikhs were thrown into. So, Bhai Mani Singh – one of the most famous martyrs in Sikhism. As a whole, we must admit that it was negligence from the side of community not to save this most famous shaheedisthaan.
